Classroom Update
The last couple days have finally brought fall temperatures along with them!
This week, as promised, I gave many, many language lessons. Today all children enjoyed their Junior Great Books work in grade level groups. Second and third graders had some grammar review. Did you know Montessori uses symbols to represent various parts of speech? We talk about the functions of words. For example, "What is the function of a verb?" "It brings energy to the sentence, they are the action words." The Montessori symbol for verb is a red sphere or circle, intentionally chosen to remind us of the sun and how it gives energy to the earth. In the photo below a student has the three dimensional symbols out as a reminder. They have copied down the daily sentences and are in the process of symbolizing the words.
Today we had our whole school photo on the hill out front, followed by our peace ceremony. One of our students had a the honor of lighting the peace candle, and the school sang a number of songs together, included the much-loved 'Light a Candle for Peace'.
